Detectives Seeking Identity of Suspect from Western Avenue Bank Robbery

UPDATE (Saturday, June 15, 2024): June Robert Zenas Whipple, 51, has been arrested and charged in connection to the robbery that happened on Friday afternoon at the City Employees Credit Union.

Last night, Knoxville Police Department officers spotted the suspect vehicle from the robbery, which was identified as a U-Haul cargo van in the course of the investigation.

After eluding officers earlier in the night in the downtown area, officers again attempted to stop the van in the Broadway area. The driver sped away again and officers pursued the van until it became disabled in the area of Millertown Pike and Washington Pike, where Whipple was ultimately taken into custody.

Whipple has been charged with robbery and felony evading arrest among other charges.

Knoxville Police Department detectives are working to identify the suspect from a robbery that occurred on Friday afternoon at City Employees Credit Union in the 4400 block of Western Avenue.

KPD officers responded to that location at around 3:40 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2024.

It was reported that the suspect shown in the attached photos entered the bank and passed the teller a note demanding money. The teller complied with those demands and the suspect left the bank.

The robbery is under active investigation by the KPD Violent Crimes Unit. That investigation is in the early stages.
